Collection of McCants family papers, 12 Feb. 1850-20 Feb. 1867 and [ca. 1890s]; consisting chiefly of documents re Thomas M. McCants' Confederate military service as a member of the Boyce Guards, Company D, Sixth Regiment, South Carolina Volunteers, including his commission as third lieutenant, 25 May 1861, and enlistment papers of men recruited by McCants, Mar. 1862. Papers include a letter, 3 Dec. 1860, dated three weeks prior to secession, from W.W. Herbert, in Strother, Fairfield District, S.C., to Messrs. Woodward, Boyleston and McCants, requesting that a petition be brought before the state legislature to allow Herbert and William S. Alston to raise an independent company of mounted men to wage guerilla war, against "our enemies upon the principle adopted by the Swamp Fox" [i.e. Revolutionary War hero, Gen. Francis Marion] Antebellum items include papers include a mortgage from George McCants to James B. McCants, 12 February 1850, involving six African American slaves identified by name and family units. Later items include a writ in debt, 20 Feb. 1867, with James B. McCants as Plaintiff's Attorney; undated campaign speech [ca. 1890s] of Ja[me]s Glenn McCants, stressing his association with the Democratic party and the need to retain white supremacy.
